Interview with MAGURA Product Manager Fabian

What distinguishing features does the new VYRON MDS-V3 have, and how does it differ from its predecessor? An interview with Product Manager Fabian about the details of the award-winning innovation for 2023.

After six years of development, MAGURA has presented the third evolutionary stage of the VYRON Vario dropper seat post. The development goals? Speed, intuitive operation and durability. The best possible performance on the trail, thanks to no fumbling around, just riding pure! We wanted to find out what exactly makes the new VYRON so unique. Product Manager Fabian was kind enough to give us an interview.

What does VYRON MDS-V3 mean?

MDS stands for MAGURA Dropper Seatpost and V3 is the third version. When it was released in 2016, it was the first remote-controlled electronic Vario seatpost on the market and has since received several awards.

How is the VYRON different from its predecessor?

In every way. The VYRON began on a blank piece of paper and now boasts a completely new interior system, new electronics and a remarkably ergonomic remote. Most notably, we switched from ANT+ remote technology to high-speed Bluetooth, making it even more intuitive than ever. Your thumb, not the actuator, decides how far you adjust the seatpost – up to 175 mm.

The intuitive operation of the last VYRON was occasionally criticized. So what was done?

On the old VYRON, the hydraulic adjustment opened at the push of a button and closed automatically after a specific time. Now the adjustment remains open until the rider releases the button. That’s much more intuitive and faster too.

Why did you choose a regular battery instead of a rechargeable one?

Our practical experience with the first VYRON showed us that a charging port has too many weak points. Water and dirt are the enemies of all electronics. To seal the new VYRON dropper post head as efficiently as possible from dirt and water, it does without a charging socket. Instead, it relies on a battery and a screwed-down battery cover, giving the dropper the best possible seal. The VYRON is also designed to be so energy-efficient that it can be operated for a whole year with just one CR2 battery!

A whole year of battery life? How did you determine this?

With the previous generations of the VYRON, we could read out the number of drops per year. Experienced mountain bikers don’t adjust their dropper seat posts more than 3000 times a year. The new VYRON MDS-V3 manages up to 9000 drops! (depending on temperature and other factors)

What about maintenance vulnerability? Do I have to bleed air from the VYRON?

We deliberately avoided a bleeding system because the VYRON is sealed to prevent air from entering the system, so it doesn’t have to be bled. However, we generally recommend the usual one-year maintenance interval, which is standard for suspension components. During the service, seals, main friction elements, and mineral oil (Royal Blood) will be replaced if required.

On which bike do you prefer to use the new VYRON?

I’ve installed it in a Propain Tyee Enduro at the moment. That bike is an absolute powerhouse downhill, but it’s also great for tackling the undulating terrain at our company headquarters in the Swabian Alb. I’ve found that the new VYRON’s fast operation is a sure winner, especially on trails with different terrains!

Who is the VYRON designed for?

Everyone. From Cross Country to Enduro. It is available in 100 mm, 125 mm, 150 mm and 175 mm travel variants and 30.9 mm and 31.6 mm diameters. That means the VYRON seatpost is the right choice for a wide range of frame sizes and riding styles.
