ABS
COMPONENTS

In 2017, Bosch eBike and MAGURA introduced an ABS system to bicycles for the first time in series production. Today, it is much more than a rare innovation; it is an established system that, together with MAGURA brake components, contributes to greater safety and control on the bicycle.
A small system that makes a big difference in an emergency but also in performance on the trail.

MORE SAFETY.

An electric drive enables higher speeds, more distance and the transport of larger loads, all resulting in new requirements for braking. Most importantly, however, the extra power means that we have to rethink braking techniques in the event of an emergency stop. A study concluded that the Bosch eBike ABS could have prevented 29% of pedelec accidents.

MORE CONTROL.

The brake components of eBikes already match the braking quality of small motorcycles. Raw power is great – but the main thing on the trail is being able to use that power in a controlled way. Whether riding in mud or over wet roots or stones – you’ll always brake like a pro with the Bosch eBike ABS. You are good. Control is better!

YOU´RE GOOD.
CONTROL IS BETTER!

Anti-lock braking system on the front wheel

When the lever blades are fully applied, the MAGURA ABS components are electronically controlled by the Bosch eBike ABS, reducing the brake pressure on the front wheel and preventing it from locking. As with a car, the pedelec then brakes at intervals until the bike comes to a stop. Steerability is maintained while you sit safely and securely in the saddle.

LIFT CONTROL FOR THE REAR WHEEL

The intelligent rear wheel lift control reduces the possible lifting of the rear wheel in the event of extremely harsh front wheel overbraking. This prevents hazardous handlebar drops and rollovers, especially on slippery surfaces or downhill gradients.

MAGURA MOTORBIKE KNOW-HOW

The combined knowledge from the innovative Bosch eBike systems & ABS and MAGURA’s many years of experience with motorcycle ABS systems guarantees the perfect interaction of all the ABS components. MAGURA has been familiar with the requirements of ABS systems for brake components for years and has been a long-standing partner of BMW Motorrad – a well-known pioneer when it comes to ABS on motorcycles. The similarity of MAGURA motorcycle and bicycle components cannot be overlooked.

MAGURA currently offers the MT C, GUSTAV, MT7 and LOUISE with compatibility to the Bosch eBike ABS.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Requirements of passive ABS systems

There are two types of ABS systems: active and passive. Active systems independently regulate brake pressure through a control unit, while passive systems reduce pressure by diverting oil into a reservoir. Our MAGURA components are specifically optimized for passive ABS systems, which place unique demands on the brake setup.

Passive systems are characterised in particular by very fine control with significantly less brake stutter and are therefore also suitable for the most demanding mountain bike applications. In order to enable the sensitive ABS function, the brake components of passive systems must fulfil specific requirements. The main requirement is a sufficiently large oil supply volume of the brake master that allows oil to be drained into the reservoir of the ABS control unit over several ABS control cycles.

The number of control cycles depends on the respective Bosch ABS mode. Bosch ABS Touring offers significantly more control cycles than Bosch ABS Race and therefore requires brake components with a particularly high oil delivery volume. The oil delivery volume is determined in particular by the diameter of the master piston. The MAGURA MT C and GUSTAV components are compatible with 12 mm master piston for the ABS modes Touring, Allroad and Trail. The MT7 with 10 mm master piston is only compatible with ABS Race.

STIFFNESS MEANS POWER

A high transmission ratio and finely tuned ABS control function are of no use if they fizzle out when the brake caliper is expanded – not every brake caliper is suitable for an ABS control function. The one-piece forged brake calipers of the MAGRUA MT and GUSTAV offer an optimum combination of rigidity and braking force even under the high demands of the ABS control function.

PERFECT MODULATION

Perfect modulation Normally, a large master piston inevitably leads to higher actuation forces for riders. To solve this problem, MAGURA has established new lever kinematics. The adapted design of the deflection kinematics reduces the required hand forces and thus ensures a short lever travel as well as easily controllable braking power. In addition to a wide grip width adjustment range, MAGURA also offers the option to choose your own preferences of lever ergonomics by using different Magura brake lever blades.
